Pursuing our work on Sustainability & Decarbonisation, we are happy to announce the release of our latest research work on waste management.
When we talk about Circular Economy, we have to identify and separate two concepts: 1) how the products are made (to be recyclable) and 2) how we dispose these products (to become recyclable). Despite the two concepts are interlinked, while the former doesn’t depend (completely) on us, the latter depends a lot on us.
When we mention “us“, we refer to the community of individuals led by local governments. Awareness-Raisning campaigns are important to inform citizens on how to deal with the issue, but descriptions remain empty words if they are not followed by facts. Suitable Infrastructures have to be installed and made easily available to incentivise individuals towards recycling.
In this study we have identified and investigated eight cities to understand their own local situation and how effectively waste management is carried out.
We chose four European cities in the EU (Madrid, Rome, Amsterdam and Bucharest), two European cities not in the EU (Oslo and Zurich) and two major U.S. cities (Los Angeles and New York).
It was very interesting to discover similarities and differences among these cities.
We also intended to add Dublin and Tokio as respectively our home town and one major capital in Asia but, for different reasons (described in the paper), it was not possible to include them.
The work was carried out by myself Allison Wisniewski who last year spent six months doing her internship in our Dublin office. Big thanks to Allison for her accurate work and constructive curiosity used to search, compare and analyse data from several sources.
